    COUNTY CLERK ATTENDS 2013 AWARDS CEREMONY FOR WEST HEMPSTEAD/FRANKLINS SQUARE ASSOCIATION OF GIRL SCOUTS - May 31, 2013

    The West Hempstead/Franklin Square Association of Girl Scouts recently held their annual Awards Ceremony to honor the Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts who have earned their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, respectively. Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell joined other area officials, the leaders and families of the West Hempstead/Franklin Square Association of Girl Scouts to honor and applaud these young women who have demonstrated enormous dedication to community service. Clerk O’Connell presented each of the honorees with Citations in acknowledgement of their wonderful achievements.



    COUNTY CLERK HONORS WANTAGH SENIORS - May 26, 2013

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell recently joined the students and their families, administration, faculty and staff of Wantagh High School for the 2013 Senior Awards Ceremony to present an exceptional member of this year’s graduating class with the County Clerk Award, Gabrielle Paradiso.

    The County Clerk Award is given to the seniors who are chosen by their school that have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service, excelled in their academics, and exemplified leadership skills among their peers. Gabrielle has personified these qualities with her own distinctive accomplishments throughout her high school career.

    COUNTY CLERK SPEAKS AT NASSAU COUNCIL OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE MEETING - May 26, 2013

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell was a guest speaker at the general membership meeting of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce. Clerk O’Connell spoke with members about the services the Clerk’s office provides to the community including the processing and maintenance of the County’s land and court records, and how to file business papers at the Clerk’s Office. Another service discussed was the recording of Veteran Certificate of Release and Discharge (DD-214) papers free of charge. As an incentive for veterans to take advantage of this service, Clerk O’Connell talked about the Nassau Veterans Recognition Program which offers Veterans discounts at participating businesses throughout Nassau County for recording their discharge papers. The Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce in cooperation with the Clerk’s office will be issuing “Decals” to be placed in the windows of local businesses participating in the County Clerk’s Veteran Discount Program. Chamber members were encouraged to enroll their businesses in the Veterans Discount Program. “It is a great opportunity for local businesses to expand their customer base and support the local economy, while showing appreciation to our veterans for their dedicated service to our country” the Clerk stated.



    COUNTY CLERK JOINS UNITED VETERANS ORGANIZATION REMEMBRANCE SERVICE - May 26, 2013

    The United Veterans Organization of Nassau County (UVONC) recently held their annual Remembrance Service at Eisenhower Park’s Veterans Memorial Plaza to honor the Veterans of Nassau County who have and continue to keep America safe. County Clerk O’Connell and other area officials joined community residents, Veterans and military personnel to honor these men and women for their unparalleled dedication to preserve and protect our freedoms.

Clerk O’Connell presented Matthew with a County Citation in recognition of his achievements. Matthew’s dedication and many accomplishments earned him the rank of Eagle Scout which is the highest award in the Boy Scouts of America. Congratulations to Matthew, and the entire Troop # 46 family on this special occasion and for all his great work on behalf of the community.

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell was the guest speaker at the Glen Cove Senior Center. Clerk O’Connell spoke with residents about the services the Clerk’s office provides to the community including the processing and maintenance of the County’s land and court records. Another service discussed was the recording of Veteran Certificate of Release and Discharge (DD-214) papers free of charge. As an incentive for veterans to take advantage of this service, Clerk O’Connell talked about the Nassau Veterans Recognition Program which offers Veterans discounts at participating businesses throughout Nassau County for recording their discharge papers. Veterans were encouraged to file their discharge papers with the County Clerk.

    Clerk O’Connell also advised residents about mass mailings for costly deed retrieval services, some of which cost 1000% more than the Clerk’s Office fees, and to disregard such offers. These deceptive solicitations advise homeowners they need to purchase a certified copy of their deed which actually can be obtained directly from the Clerk’s office for a nominal fee. She cautioned homeowners to be aware of other types of scams seen at the Clerk’s office and initiatives she has undertaken to assist and protect residents. Clerk O’Connell reminded the seniors to be wary of solicitations looking for any type of personal identifying information.



    COUNTY CLERK ATTENDS NURSING ADVISORY BOARD MEETING - May 22, 2013

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, a registered nurse and member of the Farmingdale State College Nursing Department Advisory Board, recently attended the Board’s annual meeting. Clerk O’Connell joined the discussion focusing on how the College and its Nursing Department plan to fulfill future needs and overcome the challenges facing the healthcare community in the future through new initiatives and training. Among the topics discussed were the ongoing shortage of skilled nurses and expected trends in nursing employment, the impact of cutting edge technology including electronic medical records, and the potential effects of healthcare reform on the nursing field. The Board also spoke about the implementation of simulated learning and how it enhances the educational experience for Nursing students through the use of technology to better develop and refine their skills.

    As a registered nurse and the former ranking member of the New York State Assembly Health Committee, I would like to share with you some important information about skin cancer from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. With the start of the summer season and all the fun in the sun it brings, it is easy to forget that skin cancer has become the most common form of cancer affecting more than 1 million Americans each year. Most of the time, skin cancer is caused by too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, and the risk can be reduced by taking simple protective measures.

    COUNTY CLERK O’CONNELL: COUNTY SCAR FILING PERIOD ENDS MAY 31ST - May 15, 2013

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell reminds homeowners whose initial property tax grievance was denied by the Assessment Review Commission are eligible to file an appeal through the County Clerk’s Office. This appeal, called a Small Claims Assessment Review (SCAR) Petition allows for the homeowner to file a court challenge to the denial. The County filing period deadline for this year is May 31, 2013. Individual incorporated village filing periods may vary so be sure to consult with them directly.

    SCAR Petitions and instructions can be obtained at the County Clerk’s Office or on the County Clerk’s website at http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Clerk/forms.html. Petitions can be completed by the homeowner, a service or a representative prior to filing. The completed petition must be accompanied by a $30.00 filing fee and should include supporting statements, records and other relevant information. The filing fee can be cash, check or money order payable to the "Nassau County Clerk."

    COUNTY CLERK ATTENDS MASSAPEQUA STREET FAIR - May 05, 2013

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell and other local officials participated in the festivities at the Massapequa Street Fair sponsored by the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce. Clerk O’Connell presented Massapequa Fire Department Commander and Grand Marshall Michael Hanna with a citation in recognition of his ongoing commitment to the Massapequa community.

    The fair attracted many visitors and brought together the business community and area residents. Hundreds of Massapequa merchants were able to showcase their goods and services. The fair provided an enjoyable, fun filled day for families and friends with something for people of all ages including food, rides, games and special attractions.

    Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell and other area officials participated in the First Annual Bethpage-Central Park Kiwanis Community Street Fair. The Fair attracted many visitors and brought together the business community and village residents. Hundreds of Bethpage merchants proudly displayed their goods and services. There was something for everyone – children’s rides, emerging and experienced artisans, good food and much more.
